Pont du Gard
| The Pont du Gard is a purely utilitarian structure that was designed to allow the aqueduct to cross the roach. It is huge but nothing has been done to make it "a monument". Everything has been done to the economy, no frills, only necessity. This is really just the beauty of this construction. It was never meant to be watched, isolated in nature, but to answer a technical challenge. From a height of almost 50 meters, it has at its upper length of 275 meters. It consists of three floors of different lengths following the possible support on the hill and the valley of the indentation. What is its elegance is the huge gaps that give it weight and momentum. |
The first two storeys of arches formed with openings up to 24 meters. The stability of the bridge is formed by the piles of fallen arches exactly the second floor on the first level of the batteries, thus stabilizing the third floor where the tunnel passes water supply. Each level becomes a bit of the original width from 6 meters starting at 4 meters to finish second over a width of 3 meters in height. Always seeking balance and stability. For example, if a single large arch spanning the roach, the following are based on the rock have the same profile as that at the feet in water with a front tooth to shut off the power during flooding of the river that pouvent be devastating. |
